Witness history recreated as you watch the start of the annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, otherwise known as the "Last Great Race on Earth." This flightseeing tour follows mushers and their sled dog teams as they take off from Willow to compete in this commemorative mushing race through the Alaskan wilderness.
The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, more commonly known as The Iditarod, is an annual sled dog race that starts in early March and lasts for about 10 days. Covering 1,049 miles from Willow to Nome, the Iditarod commemorates the fearless mushers and dogs who braved wintry, snowy blizzard conditions to bring a life-saving diphtheria serum to Nome in 1925 in 5 ½ days during the height of a diphtheria outbreak.
Be a part of this annual commemorative race in a way that few people ever will
— by following the race through the air. Follow along as your favorite musher works together with his team of sled dogs, racing across snow and ice crossings made possible by frozen lakes and rivers.
Best of all, you can experience this uniquely Alaskan tradition while sitting comfortably in our R44 helicopter, encased in wide-angle glass windows that offer you unobstructed bird's eye views from the air. It's the next best thing to mushing along with a sled dog team yourself!
The Iditarod viewing tour departures from Anchorage Lake hood Airport or Big Lake Airport and has two options:
Checkpoint 1: Fly 30 air miles direct to the Yentna Station, Iditarod trail sled dog race checkpoint #1 on the Yentna River.
Checkpoint 2: Fly 50 air miles directly to the historic village of Skwentna, Iditarod checkpoint #2 on the Skwentna River.
